“The natural world captivates and mystifies me, as such this work springs from a place of love and a feeling of tender connection.”

–Lainey Grace Peltier

This body of work is rooted in Peltier’s own connection to the land and natural phenomena.

Much of what we feel as humans is that we are distinct and separate from the land. Peltier asks us to let go of these feelings. The work asks of us to accept that we are a part of nature, even as we may feel distinct from it.

It asks us to look at that dividing line between ourselves and the planet, in order for it to disappear.

Stewardship of Nature and Natures Stewardship of Us

In many modern lives it is a disconnection from nature that leads to health or mental health problems, as well as political ones. It can be nature that relaxes and comforts us, that relieves us the stresses of modern life. Peltier’s work offers us a space to reflect, to consider our connection to the land;

‘…to meditate on ideas of symbiosis and the exchange of energy among ecosystems.’ —Peltier

And so it could be on us to relieve the pain we cause nature, to be a grateful steward to the land, to give back for so much nourishment.

It is on us as well to protect nature so that each of us can enjoy and benefit, now and into the future.

Eco Feminism

There is a realization possible that the same systems that exploit nature, also exploit people. They draw their conclusions from the same starting place, with the same end goal.

Ecofeminism draws on the concept of gender to analyze the relationships between humans and the natural world. This movement binds environmental concerns with feminist ones. They look to the patriarchal system as the cause of suffering, and then question patterns of thought and behavior that has led to the destruction of nature and the oppression of people.

This movement sprung up in the 70’s, when feminists saw the link behind sexism, the discrimination by gender and species, as the same logic of domination.

We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.

— Andy Goldsworthy

A culture that divides spirit from matter, emotion from intellect, nature from consciousness, while inventing ideas of gender that facilitate and justify these divisions.

Peltier brings us a collection of moments that allow for reflection and calm…

That ask us to consider our place in the natural world, as well as our duty to respect the land and ourselves.
